The top rung
At the top of the ladder, the trade-off is safety: the same model is offered in two ways.
The top rung adds another trade-off: safety. Anthropic describes Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 as the same model with different levels of safeguards.1 Fable is open to everyone with added safeguards; when Fable 5 launched, Anthropic named the safeguarded areas as cybersecurity, biology and chemistry, and copying the model ("distillation").2 Mythos is offered only to vetted individuals and organizations through trusted-access programs.1
Access can change for reasons beyond the technology: in June 2026, Anthropic says, a U.S. export-control directive led it to pause its two top models for about three weeks.34
